Five Norfolk things to do in April

1. History teacher

A rare appearance at the King’s Lynn Corn Exchange by David Starkey, the UK’s leading constitutional historian, who will bring the Tudors to life as he tells their dramatic story which he describe as, “the most glorious soap opera”. Tickets are priced £16, and the show starts at 7.30pm on Friday 15 April.

 2. All the fun of the fair

Gun dogs, horses, falconry, sheep shearing, steam engines and vintage tractors are all on show at this year’s East Anglian Game & Country Fair on 23-24 April. Don’t miss a display by The Royal Signals White Helmets, who defy the laws of gravity as they form a human pyramid atop their motorcycles. The action takes place at the Norfolk Showground, with gates open from 8am daily.

3. Keep it local

Enjoy local produce, meat, fish and shellfish at the Sandringham Farmers’ Market on 24 April, and the last Sunday of every month. Easy parking, head to the visitor centre and take your pick of fresh from the field supplies.

4. On the spot

Ever wanted to know your avocets from your bitterns,? Head to RSPB Titchwell on 26 April for a Beginners’ Birding talk, so you can twitch without tuts from those in the know. Once you’re done, head to Briarfields for a bite to eat and a glass of something rewarding.

5. Hear a US author at Briarfields

Former New York management consultant Michelle Miller was spotted by Penguin Random House after she posted her debut novel in digital installments. See the US writer make a rare UK appearance at a special Bookfest at Briarfields at 6.30pm on Thursday 28 April. Her book, The Underwriting, has been described as The Social Network meets The Wolf of Wall Street, and centres on a suspenseful tale of intrigue and foul play as character Todd Kent battles to close a $14bn deal for a dating app. Tickets are priced £15 including a fish pie supper and a glass of wine, so grab your book club pals and enjoy an evening out.
